    Square Magazine / Stenoflex pinhole competition FAQ

    Q: What is it?

    A: Send us a selection of square format pinhole images, 1000x1000pix @72 dpi at least, to competition@squaremag.org before the 31st May… Er… that’s it.

    Q: What about the legal stuff?

    A: If you are a winner, you’ll retain all rights to your images and you’ll be credited, but you’ll have to agree to let use your images in the magazine (obviously) and also to use them for self promotion. You’ll get a form to sign and that’ll be it.

    Q: Do you accept non square images?

    A: No! Never! Mwaaaahaaaaa… But we accept square images from any square format pinhole setup you can think of.

    Q: iPhone pinhole?

    A: er… nope. It has to be “proper” pinhole, that is created either on film or on paper (then scanned to send to us).

    Q: I still have a question and I can’t find an answer to it in the FAQ! What do I do?

    A: Try 42, the answer to everything. Nah, seriously, if you are still unsure about something, drop us a line: editor@squaremag.org.

      Do the images have to come from a camera?
      I create square wet plate collodion tintype photograms so they are cameraless but they are square or made up of squares.
      Would this work be acceptable?
      It is the calligraphy series on my website.
      Thank you.

      @Gayle, yeah! No problem!

      By participating (or winning), does Lomography also get to use the images for promotion? I do not in any way wish to support Lomography or their enterprises.

      Thanks,
      Robert

      wow.. you guys are coming up with questions I never thought about :) The images will be used by Square Magazine and might appear on the Lomography website, yes, if they do a feedback on the competition for instance. Kind of on Lomography through square. So… I don’t quite know the answer to that particular query. I’ll have to come back to you on thta one.

      est ce que les images doivent avoir été obligatoirement prises en 2010, ou peuvent-elles être représentatives de 2010 mais avoir été prises en 2009/2008 ?

    • Christophe Dillinger said at 3:47pm on October 12th, 2010:

      @nova, mmm… je crois que l’on va demander une série de photos prises en 2009/2010 oui.

      A: No! Never! Mwaaaahaaaaa… But we accept square images from any square format camera: toy camera, Diana, mini Diana Mini, Holga, Hasselblad, Bronica, iPhone… IPHONE WTF???? since when iPhone is a toy camera ?? like the name suggests it is a phone

    • Christophe Dillinger said at 8:00pm on October 16th, 2010:

      @Dominik, In this sense, a Bronica is not a toy camera either. An Iphone is a phone, sure, but it also produces square photos, which are eligible.

    • Ramiro said at 10:27pm on October 20th, 2010:

      Mm.. I don’t have any camera that produces square pictures right away. May I compose in square (mentally) in a “normal” 3:2 camera, then resize them (to be squares) and send them to you?

    • Christophe Dillinger said at 8:25am on October 21st, 2010:

      @Ramiro, yes, we’ll trust you on this one.

      Hi there. Do we have to send you lo-res photos via email or do you want hi-res? 15 hi-res pics in one email is a little big heavy thing…
      Best,
      Davide

      p.s. or may we provide you flickr links?

    • jeannie said at 6:41pm on April 26th, 2011:

      I have a few prints created from a pinhole camera. It is not originally in a square format however, I can crop them to be squared, is this permitted? Thanks.

    • jeannie said at 7:02pm on April 26th, 2011:

      I have a few more questions, do we have to send in 10? no less, no more? I don’t have 10 “proper” pinhole camera images. :( just 3 to be exact…

      I also saw that iPhone images are also permitted? At first it was stated that “…It has to be “proper” pinhole, that is created either on film or on paper (then scanned to send to us).” and thus, iPhone is not permitted?

      But then in your response on October 16, it was stated that iphone images in square formate are eligible? could you please clarify Thanks.

      Christophe Dillinger said on April 30th, 2011 -

      @jeannie, Yes, we’ll accept iPhone picts, I need to change the FAQ. As to the 10 images, it is an editorial “policy” to present series, not just images.

    • Christophe Dillinger said at 7:07pm on April 26th, 2011:

      @jeannie, We do need at least 10 images, yes. As for iPhone pinholes, I guess it will be permitted, although it is a very tricky question.

    • Christophe Dillinger said at 7:11pm on April 26th, 2011:

      @jeannie, I’d rather the images to be square to start with. There was a bit of an problem in our latest issue, with Jacobson’s work, which was presented squared, but is not originally squared. We took the decision to accept only squared from the beginning type of images from now on.
      That doesn’t mean images can’t be cropped, only that they should be conceived as square images to start with. We would trust the artist in the case of digital images.

    • Christophe Dillinger said at 7:11pm on April 26th, 2011:

      @davide, low res is fine

    • John said at 1:25pm on April 29th, 2011:

      Hi ! Will iPhone Hipstamatic square pictures be accepted ?

      Christophe Dillinger said on April 30th, 2011 -

      @John, yep.

      Is this only open for US or other countries too? I am from Nepal and I want to take part in it so.

      Christophe Dillinger said on May 1st, 2011 -

      @Gaurav Dhwaj Khadka, the competition is open to anyone, anywhere (we’re not based in the US by the way, but England and France).

    • Christophe Dillinger said at 10:30am on May 1st, 2011:

      @scott, I meant acceptable for the competition AND the magazine.
